THE PARABLE OF THE LAMP AND ILLUMINATION

Luke 8:16-25

 

  1. The Lamp (vs. 16-18)

a. In the parable does Jesus point out the obvious that everyone knows what to do with a lit lamp and knows why they do it?
 

b. The second part of the parable is where the “meat” of the parable is found.  The earthly understanding is that everyone is revealed in the light and everything is observable…what is the spiritual meaning?
 

c. Does verse 18 seem out of place for the parable on illumination and seeing?
  What about when you consider Jesus is speaking in parables and not everyone was grasping the spiritual meaning… does it seem connected now?

 

d. What warning of this parable is echoed in the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30?

 

  1. Jesus’ Family (vs. 19-21)

a. How do we know that Jesus had (half) brothers?
 

 b. Does Jesus immediately go to them and see them?
 

c. Who does Jesus state is His family?
 

d. What does this passage say about priorities?

 

  1. Power Over the Wind and Waves (vs. 22-25)

a. Who told the disciples to get in the boat and where to go?
 

b. Are there any clues to suggest the disciples expected weather to be a factor on this day?
 

c. What happens?

 

d. In this event how are both Jesus’ humanity and divinity on display?

 

He Application:  Does Jesus still have authority over the wind and waves? 

How about the circumstances of life?
