What will PROPHET OR MESSIAH?

Luke 7:11-23
  1. Jesus’ Compassion (vs. 11-17)

a. Verse 11 would indicate that Nain would have been close (a day’s journey) to Capernaum (vs. 1).  What does Jesus and His entourage see as they enter the city?
 

b. What details are given about the dead and his family?
 

c. Culturally, why may this situation have aroused Jesus compassion more so than other with different circumstances?
 

d. In verse 14 Jesus draws near and touches the open coffin…why could this have been perceived as a problem on religious grounds? 
 

e. When the men carrying the coffin stand still what does Jesus do? 
 

f. What is the response from each player? 
   1. The young man?
   2. The crowd?
   3. What was probably the response of the widow? 

 

g. What does the crowd presume about Jesus?
 

h. Who do they credit with this miracle? 


 

  1. John the Baptist’ Question (vs. 18-23)

a. What “things” do John’s disciples report to him?
 

b. Where is John when this happens? (Luke 3:19-20)
 

c. Why may John the Baptist (and many others who knew the prophesies) been confused about Jesus ministry and mission?
 

d. When John’s disciples ask Jesus John’s question what does Jesus do in response?
 

e. What is the only answer Jesus sends back to John?
