Man Of Sorrows: Isaiah 53:1-12

MAN OF SORROWS

Isaiah 53:1-12

I. Despised and Rejected (vs. 1-3)

   a. All of chapter 53 focuses on the Messiah. Although Isaiah is declaring
what God has revealed, would the people believe it?

   b. Verse 2 offers two distinct perspectives: What is God’s view?

      What is man’s view?

   c. What parallel do we see in verse 3 and John 1:10-11?

   d. What is being described that would cause men to hide their faces from
     the Christ?

II. Smitten By God (vs. 4-9)

   a. For bearing our griefs (sicknesses) and carrying our sorrows (pains),
what does Jesus get for His good and by Whom?

   b. For what cause would Jesus suffer all these things in verses 5-6?

   c. How did Jesus respond to the physical abuse He endured? (John 19:9-10)

   d. Verses 8-9 describe the literal death of the Messiah. How were the details
described here fulfilled at Jesus’ death and burial?

III. You Make His Soul an Offering for Sin (vs. 10-12)

   a. What about all that would happen to the Christ would “please the Lord”,
and why would it please Him? (Hebrews 12:2)

   b. Verse 10 reveals a vital aspect of the atoning death of Christ. What
     phrase reveals this?

   c. Who would be His seed since He was killed and had no children?

   d. What fruit results from “the labor of His soul?”

   e. Do verses 11-12 state that everyone is saved by what Jesus would do?

Application: We know that every one of these prophecies about the Messiah were fulfilled by Jesus. Also, knowing that our salvation, dearly bought, was altogether accomplished in Christ. How then should we live? (Luke 9:23)
