God Fulfills His Promise

Genesis 21:1-21

I. Isaac is Born (vs. 1-7)

a. Verse 1 sees a fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham and Sarah. What promise does this answer? 

 

 

b. How was the birth of Isaac truly miraculous? 

 

 

c. Why was the timing of this miraculous birth especially significant? 

 

 

d. What does Isaac mean in the Hebrew language?  

 

 

e. What did Abraham do on the eighth day that marked God’s covenant on Isaac? 

 

 

f.  Was Sarah’s laughter and her invitation for others to laugh with her dishonoring toward God or marveling at His awesome power?

 

 

 

II. Family Problems (vs. 8-12)

          a. When Isaac was weaned, what angered Sarah at the feast? 

 


 

          b. Was this scoffing (mocking / laughter) good natured or a problem?  

 

 


          c. What does Sarah tell Abraham to do? 

 

 


          d. Was the demand easy for Abraham to hear and do?

 

 


          e. Who intervenes and confirms this is what Abraham needs to do? 

 

 


          f. Why was obedience necessary for God’s plan for Abraham’s family?

 

 

 

III. Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away (vs. 13-21)
