Babylon: I Will Take Vengeance: Isaiah 47:1-15

BABYLON: I WILL TAKE VENGEANCE

Isaiah 47:1-15

I. A Change of Fortunes! (vs. 1-7)
   a. Babylon is described as “a virgin daughter…tender and delicate”; clearly a
picture of wealth and privilege. What will be her condition after the Lord
     judges them?

   b. Verse 4 seems to be oddly situated, but how does it stand in contrast to
what would become of Babylon? (Isaiah 46:1)

   c. Who is bringing this calamity upon Babylon, and for what cause?

   d. “The Lady of Kingdoms” is a reference to the influence Babylon had on
the world. Was it a favorable or unfavorable influence?

   e. In the end times, “Babylon” is symbolic of all spiritual rebellion against
God. How is this brought to light in Revelation 14:8?

II. No One Shall Save You (vs. 8-15)
   a. Is there anything weirdly familiar about verse 8?

   b. Why does God state in verses 9-10, this calamity falls on Babylon?

   c. Were the Babylonians going to know that their demise was imminent?

   d. God tells the Babylonians to keep doing what they were doing with their
sorceries etc., and that maybe they would somehow profit. Was He being
     serious?

   e. If their sorceries were not enough, they will weary themselves with a
multitude of counsels. Who will they consult?

   f. How is God’s judgment portrayed in verse 14?

   g. Will any be able to turn back God’s judgment?

Application: What problems arise when people are given to pleasures and believe themselves secure, and boast of their unequaled greatness?
