Genesis 4:25-5:32
I. Another Son for Adam and Eve (vs. 25-26)
a. Seth (Heb) shayth = appointed or substituted. Why does Eve name their next son Seth?
b. When Seth was of age relationally who would he have married?
c. What significant action takes place after the birth of Enosh, Seth’s son?
d. What does it mean to “call on the name of the Lord?
II. The Family of Adam (vs. 1-32)
a. Chapter 5 spans the generations from Adam to Noah. In Genesis 5:1 we are reminded that Adam was created in Who’s likeness?
b. Was the blessing pronounced in verse 2 permanent?
Explain.
c. What else does this passage (vs. 3-4) tell us about Adam and Eve?
d. What phrase in verse 5 is the result of Adam’s sin?
e. What recurring phrase is found in verses 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 27, 31 and why?
f. What one man the 7th from Adam appears to have had a different departure (vs. 21-24)?
What happened to him?
g. As you look at the ages of Adam and his descendants what do you notice?
h. Who was the oldest man on record from Genesis 5?
How long did he live?
III. Noah (vs. 28-32)
a. Why did Lamech name his son Noah and what does this tell us was still in effect from Genesis 3:17-19?
b. The proliferation of mankind is inferred by the long lives lived and the recurring statements that each had “sons and daughters.” Humanity had been fruitful and multiplied.
c. Generally speaking what seems to have been the average age of the men listed?
Application: When we as Christians ponder Romans 6:23, when was this consequence of sin placed in effect?
