A Light To The Gentiles: Isaiah 49:1-26

A LIGHT TO THE GENTILES

Isaiah 49:1-26

I. My Servant (vs. 1-7)
   a. To Whom do verses 1-7 seem to be referring?

   b. What contextual clues help? (Isaiah 42:6-7. Luke 4:14-21)

   c. What other place in Scripture is the Lord’s mouth also described as a
     sharp sword?  (Revelation 19:15)

   d. What phrase in verse 6 describes the Messiah’s mission?

II. I Will Not Forget You (vs. 8-18)
   a. As we have seen before, prophecy can have a dual application.
Considering the past chapters and the promise to bring Israel back from
captivity as the near application, what is the distant application of
     verses 8-13?

   b. What would the captivity incorrectly cause Zion to think?

   c. What promises does the Lord offer to His people that should bring them
      great comfort?

III. I, The Lord Am Your Savior (vs. 19-26)
   a. In a picture of a land devoid of her people, what promise is offered to
     Israel in verses 19-21?

   b. Verses 22-26 picture Israel returning back to the land of promise. How
     will they be returned?

   c. Has this passage been fulfilled yet?         Has any of it been
fulfilled?               When will it be completed?

Application: God has purposed salvation to the ends of the earth and that includes the Jews and the Gentiles! God has not cast off His people, Israel, but does not require less of them for salvation than the Gentiles. (Romans 1:16) Paul indicates their spiritual blindness has meant salvation for the Gentiles, (Romans 11:7-15) but also promises that one day they will be saved.
(Romans 11:26) If Paul wrote about this and looked forward to its fulfillment, when will it take place?
