September 2020

The mushrooms have populated my lawn, the leaves are starting to turn yellow, and the garden is showing signs of winding down…there can be no doubt that fall is upon us!

In John 16 Jesus reassures His disciples that even though difficult days were coming and that they were to endure but even more than just simply enduring He promises His peace. John 16:33 “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” I find these words especially comforting in light of the circumstances and events taking place in the world around us…the pandemic, riots, economic turmoil, political upheaval, divisiveness, job insecurity, shutdowns…the list goes on and on. But Jesus is still with us and He is still our peace in all of this. Matthew 24 speaks of the events leading up to the last days and truthfully, the description matches what we see in our time. We may not like what we see but as Jesus points out John 16:4a “But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them”. Knowing that none of this takes God by surprise and that He told us about it in advance helps us know He is ever with us and holding fast to Him we will get through it and can continue to be of good cheer. Continue to pray for, lift up, and encourage one another…meet needs where you can, and share needs with the body where you cannot. Reach out beyond the body with the truth of the Gospel and be bold. There are people looking for the answers you have in Jesus Christ. Share Him in love. Don’t be discouraged by those who reject the message of the cross…pray for them. But don’t stop sharing Christ because some will believe and be saved.

September is our “state missions” emphasis month. We will be taking up the Valeria Sherard missions offering to assist the spread of the Gospel across Alaska. Please give as the Lord leads you.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of Southern Baptist work in Alaska. The annual meeting of the Alaska Baptist Resource Network (Alaska Baptist Convention) will meet September 29-30th. If you are able please attend and encourage the continuing work across our state.
