ELIHU ANSWERS JOB PART 4

Job 36:1-33              “Elihu Extols God’s Virtues”       

 

I.      “Speaking on God’s Behalf”…Really? (vs. 1-12) 

a. What does Elihu boast in verses 1-4? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________

b. In verses 5-7 Elihu generally describes his view of God’s actions toward the righteous and unrighteous.  Does it sound right? ________

c. In verses 8-12 Elihu basically repeats the retribution theology of Bildad, Eliphaz, and Zophar.  What does he state Job needs to do and if he does it what will God do for Job? ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

                                                                                                                                                   

II.     But the Hypocrites… (vs. 13--23)

a. Who is Elihu calling a hypocrite? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

b. As Elihu sees it, Job’s suffering is the act of a merciful God pleading for his repentance and return.  Is this how Job understands his suffering? ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

c. What does Elihu see as the immediate end of the “hypocrite?” ________________________________________________________________________

d. According to Elihu whose fault is it that Job suffers? ____________ Also, does he indicate that Job could have ended the suffering any time he wanted by just repenting? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

e. Elihu presents Job’s words of lament as calling God unjust. Verse 23…Elihu accuses Job of saying “You have done wrong.”  Did Job say that? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

 

III.   God is Great… (vs. 24-33)

a. In this last section Elihu simply magnifies God’s greatness.  What do you think he means in verse 26, “and we don’t know Him?” __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

b. What example does he offer in verses 27-33 to prove God’s greatness? ________________________________ Who else spoke a similar thing? (Job 26:7-8) ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

c. Is there anything new here that Elihu offers that Job has not heard or even speculated about himself? ________________________________ In any of Elihu’s words is Job convicted or comforted? __________________________________________________________________________________________

 

IV.  Application:  Can we ever assume perfect knowledge of a matter and speak on God’s behalf? ____________________________________
