Identity

October 2019

A rare picture without kids.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
1 Peter 2:9

We fill a lot of roles (and you do, too): spouse, parent, student, employee, friend, child, missionary. We step into each role in a specific time and place to help meet a need, fill a gap, or engage in relationship. Sometimes Ruth's tongue gets ahead of her brain and she'll call Allen "mom" or me "dad" - but even then, she knows who we are and the role we play in her life.

But those roles are not our identity.

As believers in our glorious Lord, Jesus Christ (James 2:1), our identity is rooted in Him. We are children of God (John 1:12), made in His image (Genesis 1:27), and His special possession (1 Peter 2:9). We are fully known (Jeremiah 1:5) and have been raised with Christ (Colossians 3:1).

We live out that identity in our various roles: how I act as a wife and mama should be different because of my identity in Christ. How Allen acts as a student and son-in-law should be different. And how we respond to challenges should be different, too.

We had lots of challenges this month. Our oven went out with a bang (literally), we experienced lots of fatigue (and all parents of littles said, "Amen!"), we struggled to make deep and lasting connections with people. We didn't see God provide what we needed to attend Field Prep this fall (more about that later).

Our roles were affected by those things, for sure. We felt like "bad parents" when our kids didn't sleep through the night. We felt like "bad missionaries" when we couldn't make some connections we really wanted to make.

But those roles are not our identity.

If our identity had been wrapped up in those hard things that happened, they would have paralyzed us. We would have started spouting off unkind and self-centered things to make ourselves feel better. We would have wanted to curl up into a ball, eating bonbons and watching Netflix (I mean...).

So this month, we intentionally reminded ourselves of our identity in Christ. Over and over and over. Sometimes out loud to one another. Sometimes in the stillness of our hearts. Sometimes in the chaos of our living room or our minds.

We are His. We are children of God. We are chosen and dearly loved. We are not marked by a failing stove or a sleepless child. We are overcomers. We are co-heirs with Christ.

Maybe you can relate. Maybe this has been a crazy fall for you, too, and you're struggling to come up from the sinking sand of a misplaced identity. If so, maybe this can encourage you: That's not who God created you to be. That's not who you are. Cling to the promises of Scripture that speak to your true identity in Christ. And if you don't know what that is, shoot us an email. We'd love to help you discover it.

When we reached 75% of our monthly support earlier this month, Clara made a video to share the big news! You can watch it HERE on our YouTube channel.

This month, we praise God for...

  • His provision when stoves and refrigerators go out (or threaten to go out) unexpectedly.
  • How He is blessing our Sunday School class - we have loved getting to teach again regularly and are thankful for the fruit God is producing in our lives and in the lives of those who attend.
  • Coffee (but then again, that's a regular thing in our lives).
  • The people He has brought to partner with us, who are faithfully partnering with us in prayer and financially. We love you.

In October, we...

  • ...celebrated Allen's birthday with a brunch date, flu shots, and German Chocolate cake...
  • ...played and ate candy while dressed as princesses at our church's Fall Festival...
  • ...rested, laughed, demonstrated self-defense moves, and lead a small-group at the annual women's retreat...
  • ...and found joy in little things, like baby puffs stuck to baby chins.

Coming Up

While praying about attending Field Prep Seminar (FPS), we both felt God leading us to attend the April 2020 session. Until then, we are continuing partnership development and pre-field assignments. We are sharing at Hillside Baptist Church on November 3rd and hosting a prayer night on November 9th for missions and Togo at our house.

Pre-Field Update

The Lord has faithfully provided over 3/4 of our required monthly support, putting us officially 76% of our monthly need! God has also provided 79% of our Outfit & Passage (O&P) need, which is over $90,000! That's enough to pay for language school, a vehicle in Togo, and our projected shipping costs.

Team Update

A big focus of the Togo South Team is Christian Education. This year, over 4,000 children at 16 elementary schools and 5 middles schools are being reached through this critical ministry. As you think of them, pray for the teachers who are engaging in these kiddos' education everyday. What an important job and what an open door for the Gospel to be proclaimed!
