Faith Acts ~ James 2:14-26

 

I.   FAITH BY ITSELF…IS DEAD (vs. 14-17)

a. James asks an interesting question.   What profit is there in faith alone? iu

b. How do you reconcile verse 14 and Ephesians 2:8-9?

(what if you add Eph 2: 10?)

c. What is James describing in s 15-16?

d. How does James view faith that does not have works? 
 

II. THE DEMONS BELIEVE AND TREMBLE (vs. 18-23)

a. James presents an argument in legal form in verse 18.  What point does he make?

b. What is his response to those who say it is enough just to believe?

c. How does James describe those who profess to believe but have no works?  

d. What example in Abraham does James offer as proof of Abraham’s faith?
 

III. THE NEED FOR WORKS (VS. 24-26)

a. James continues with a theological point about justification in vs. 24.  What is James saying justifies a man?

b. How did Rahab distinguish herself in her dealings with the Israelite spies?

c. James makes one final example for his point about faith without works what is the example and does it fit?

 

IV. Application:  It has been argued by Biblical scholars that James and Paul were at odds over faith and works.  But given Paul’s words to the Ephesians (2:8-10) and James 2, what do you say?
